More Vitamin D, and for another reason…

Another study and another reason to take vitamin D…

A recent study in the European Journal of Endocrinology showed that men with low levels of vitamin D over the age of 40 were significantly more likely to have low free testosterone levels than men with the highest vitamin D. In addition, those with lower vitamin D were more likely to be overweight or obese, were less physically active, had poorer physical function, and had the greatest incidence of depression. They were also more likely to have diabetes and cardiovascular disease. There was a strong seasonal effect between the winter months correlated with the lowest levels of vitamin D, though there doesn’t seem to be a seasonal effect on testosterone. This may suggest that Vitamin D has more of an effect on overall testicular health than a direct effect on testosterone.  There is also a correlation with vitamin D and LH, the hormone from the pituitary gland that stimulates the testes. But again, no seasonal effect of LH is seen. This may again suggest that vitamin D’s role is in maintaining the health of the pituitary gland. If this is the case, then future studies will likely show that Vitamin D is also correlated with other hormones that come from the pituitary, such as growth hormone.

During this time of year, it is best make sure your vitamin D levels are sufficient. If you have noticed more carb cravings, loss of strength or energy, or a decrease in motivation, there is a good chance that your levels have dropped into the lower ranges. Supplementing with 5,000-10,000 IU’s is a sufficient dose for most people if taken with Vitamin K.   If you are on a moderate to high dose and are still symptomatic, give us a call and we can look into further optimizing your levels.
