Kettlebell swings, an exercise of Russian origin, have long been taught for their benefits for fitness, strength and performance. However, very little research has been done concerning kettlebell training. Recent research demonstrated that kettlebell swings, a popular kettlebell exercise, improve posture and spine erector strength. This, in theory, should decrease back pain though it was not studied at this time. this demonstrates that kettlebell swings can be a useful part of fitness routines that are target general strength and fitness.
This study also tested vertical jump height before and after 8 weeks of kettlebell swing training compared to control. It was found that the exercise group did significantly increase vertical jump height, but not when compared to the control group which had a small non-significant increase in vertical jump.
This indicates that kettlbell swings are useful for general strength and fitness, but may not be the best option for improving performance.
